“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Do you believe that? Many of you do believe in creation by Intelligent design. Some of you may not. Do I have absolute proof of creation? I do not. I wasn’t there. The same as Darwin, who wasn’t there in his theory of evolutionary origins. But “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” is what I hang my worldview on. The account of the creation week of seven days is a firm foundation. It is a solid rock. It is deep roots.
Creation gives us our origins. And it is straight from God’s heart and literal hands. He made us, we are His. On day six, he created and breathed life into man and woman — male and female. It was not good to have only man, so woman was created. That is a firm foundation.
The seventh day is a special day. It was the completion of creation. An end to His work week. The Bible says He rested that day. But even more, it says God BLESSED the seventh day and he SANCTIFIED it. He made it HOLY. Big and meaningful words for just a day.
For all time, every week’s seventh day was meant to be like creation’s birthday. A memorial day of sorts. A day to remember God created the heavens and the earth. God created man and woman. God created life.
If you skip to the good old 10 Commandments, the seventh day of creation makes the cut. Along with the good ideas to not steal, lie, murder, or commit adultery, the fourth commandment starts with “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work but the seventh day is the Sabbath to the Lord your God.”
It’s the only commandment that starts with REMEMBER! Don’t forget! It is like God knew we would. And what again are we remembering? The week of creation itself. We are remembering our Creator God. The giver of life.
That is why I celebrate the Sabbath. The seventh day. Saturday. Does that sound Jewish? Old covenant-ish? Hey, I am not the one who made that specific day holy! It is straight from God himself.
The Sabbath is a firm foundation when the world is telling us 2+2 = 5. The Sabbath is a solid rock to live on when scholars are selling evolution like they have a DVD of proof. God himself said “remember” because He knew we would live in a world that screams at us to forget. He said “remember” because He knew we would need deep roots for the storm that is coming.
