Driving home this evening after a challenging day at work, I listened to my favorite podcast and learned about an organization called Wall Builders. In the introduction, it was explained the name Wall Builders was taken from the Bible book of Nehemiah. David Barton, the founder of this organization, explained he really loved the idea and image of rebuilding what had been torn down. Everyone did something to fix the broken wall. If you read Nehemiah 3, you will find neighbor after neighbor, priests and perfume makers alike, working side-by-side. It’s a bit tedious to read, but paints a great picture!
Everyone did something. Some, only rebuilding their own home, others, a larger part. Mr. Barton likens that to the challenges of rebuilding the walls of our society; our own families, neighborhoods, work environments, churches, and even our great nation. If everyone does a little, a lot can be accomplished.
All hands on deck! An inside joke-slash-battle cry on our labor and delivery floor. We laugh when we mutter it to break the tension, but it’s true! All hands working together, side-by-side, to overcome and fix situations, is a beautiful thing!
I’m sure we are all aware of broken walls in our sphere of influence. At the least, some walls with scuffs or holes. But it’s an interesting idea to think about, isn’t it? If we were all wall builders, if we had all hands on deck, just what could we overcome and rebuild?
