I was watching some TV the other day when the Twix candy bar commercial came on. Do you know the one? The left side versus right side — they have about as much in common as a custodian and a janitor. Yeah, you know the one! What a goofy gimmick, right? I mean, everyone already knows the right side is the best! 😜 But at the end of the commercial I noticed something I had not ever before noticed. The Twix left-side, right-side commercial said it was time for us to “de-SIDE!” Now this was clever to me! We had to decide a side…”de-side.”
That’s exactly what we have to do every day. We have to “de-side” what side of the bed we are getting out of. Now, sometimes this is a challenge for me because I don’t like to get out of either side some mornings! But we have to “de-side.” Will we have joy in the day? Or a sour spirit? Will we pray for eyes of compassion or just judge away? Will we be the light, or will we be a storm cloud? We have to “de-side!”
And whose side are we playing for? This week I have found inspiration in the Clemson football coach, Dabo Swinney. Clemson beat Alabama and made it look easy! As I read about this coach’s life, I was very inspired. One of his quotes went something like, “If there is really hope in the future, then there’s power in the present.” Do we believe this? It’s time to “de-side.”
As Joshua asked the angel, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”, are we for Him or against Him? Several places in the Gospels Jesus clearly tells us we are either for Him or we are against Him. I hope we decide as Joshua did. “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Seems like the right side to me!
