Do you know Nick Vujicic? He is a cool, Australian guy! He’s a great motivational speaker for kids and adults. He has a beautiful wife, a cute son, and another baby on the way. But what makes him so special is he doesn’t have any arms or legs! Just a little “chicken drumstick” as he calls it- a small, misshaped appendage that surprisingly comes in handy. Google him! And watch some videos he has done. Really good stuff! This week on his Facebook, I noticed a post called “Disabled or Enabled?” I sorta thought about that, but not too much at the time.
I did corndogs on Tuesday (Editor Note: At her son’s school for lunch) and Teresa Regal came by to learn how corndogs were done. I hadn’t seen her in a long time! She and I and Lee chatted. And somewhere in there, she mentioned having therapy after her accident. “What accident?,” I asked. And she told the story of how three years ago she fell through the attic and about broke her foot off! Ow! But she shared how during the long recovery and time of not being able to physically work as a nurse, she WAS ABLE to care for her grandkids and spend quality time with them. This was during a time when they really needed it! She literally teared up when speaking about it! She shared how it turned out to be a gift, a true blessing, and she was so happy she had that experience. She’s convinced if the accident hadn’t of happened, it would have been “business as usual,” and she wouldn’t have been able to have that special time.
Disabled or Enabled?
James 1:2. “Consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance…”
Seriously? I don’t know about that! Really? Pure joy?
Romans 8:28. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
That one is a little easier for me to swallow. But only a little. Let’s face it. In my limited worldly-vision I don’t see a lot of good having been worked out from my dad’s death.
This week one of our friends from Ozark-years-past, after being 5 years breast cancer free, was told she now has a brain tumor. She’s my age. She’s a mom. A wife. A nurse.
Habakkuk 1:2. ” How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?”
Now Habakkuk has something here! I can totally relate to that complaint!
Disabled or Enabled?
What are you? What am I? Clearly, Satan is doing all he can to disable us. To make us sick. Hurt us. Make us bitter. He did all he could do to disable Job. But Job had a foundation that allowed him to turn towards God and not away from Him.
This world brings such sadness and suffering, pain and death. I long for our home eternal. This week, let’s think about perspective. Think about being enabled through difficulties and not disabled by the devil. Pray for my friend, Stephanie!
“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength…HE ENABLES me to tread on the heights.” Habakkuk 3:17
