The 3 Fs of Thanksgiving

I guess I’ve been writing for awhile now! This is something I wrote In November of 1990. I had just turned 18 and was a Senior at Ozark Adventist Academy. I was co-editor for the Mountain Echo, the school newspaper. And when I say school newspaper, it was that…we put addresses on them and actually mailed them! It was the only way to communicate to our parents and friends of Ozark what was happening! Wow! Times have changed! In some ways! In some ways it has stayed exactly the same…

Thanksgiving for me can be summarized with three F’s. Food, family, and fun. Thanksgiving is the only holiday for which my entire family comes together. Every year it is a tradition for the Webbs to congregate in the little southern town of Monticello. All the relatives come. I hardly ever see my grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, brothers, and even my parents for that matter! I guess that’s one reason Thanksgiving is so special.

And talk about food! Mom’s cooking comes close (notice the word close, Mom) to being second with Grandma’s. Homemade biscuits, turkey and dressing, roast …especially for my brother whose tongue tickles when he eats turkey…and of course, pecan pie. Obviously, dieting over Thanksgiving is unheard of!

And fun! My family is pretty humorous. Some of you who have heard my jokes may find this difficult to believe, however, it is true. We usually watch football games which can sometimes get quite exciting in the Webb family! There’s no end to the entertainment from my brother and little cousin Andy. Although they can get quite crude…disgusting things that only a boy could get a kick out of doing…they are usually pretty comical.

But even more than just good cooking and a lot of fun, Thanksgiving has become a time of counting my blessings. Even though my family has scattered, leading individual lives now, in our hearts we stay close and Thanksgiving is a time when we all come together again. God has blessed my family with health, success, babies, and love. He’s given me parents who would do anything for me and brothers who would go to any lengths to protect me.

In my family, Thanksgiving truly means more than just another holiday, just another occasion for lots of food. It is a reunion for family members who not only love each other, but who love the One who deserves the most thanks of all.

Thanksgiving was and still is my favorite holiday! May each one of you have a joyful Thanksgiving 2016! Count your blessings, forget the diet, laugh, enjoy those people you love the most, and don’t leave out the One who deserves the most thanks of all!
